Read the Foreword

As an integrative medicine practitioner, I’ve had the privilege of seeing firsthand how critical nutrition is to the overall health of my patients. But it wasn’t until I became a mother and a wife that I truly understood the daily struggle of providing the right food to those I love most—my family. The world of food today is full of contradictions, and it's hard to know what is genuinely nourishing for our bodies, especially when faced with the brightly colored packaging and catchy advertisements that dominate every aisle of the grocery store. As a seasoned nurse and nurse practitioner, I was used to dealing with complex medical issues, but when it came to feeding my family in a way that truly supported their health, I felt helpless.

I wasn’t trained in nutrition during nursing school or graduate programs, which is ironic given that what we eat impacts every aspect of our lives—our immune systems, our energy levels, and yes, even our mental health. Our diet can affect how we sleep, how our joints feel, and how we age. But for years, I didn’t know where to begin or how to reconcile what I knew about nutrition with the food choices available to us, all while balancing cost, taste, and the endless demands of family life.

This book is dedicated to my husband, my children, and every parent or caregiver who is trying to make the best choices for their loved ones, even when faced with overwhelming options. It’s also dedicated to the “in-between” moments when we feel defeated or unsure. There are times when it seems that food manufacturers have done a brilliant job of making processed foods appealing, with bright colors and irresistible TV ads. And as parents, we often find ourselves caught between making choices that will keep our kids happy and doing what we know is best for their long-term health. The truth is, as a society, we need to do better. We need to provide a healthier, more sustainable approach to nutrition for our children and families, reducing the risk of inflammation, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and cancer.

As more attention is drawn to the vast differences between the food industry in the U.S. versus Europe, and as we witness alarming spikes in childhood obesity and cancers such as gastric and colon cancer, the need to better understand the root causes of illness is clearer than ever. Nutrition plays a huge part in these rising rates of chronic diseases, and it’s time we take a step back and look at how we can make more mindful, informed choices when it comes to feeding ourselves and our families.

This book isn’t about perfection—it’s about starting somewhere. It’s a quick-start guide for those who, like me, once didn’t know where to begin in the “crunchy” world of whole foods and natural living. It’s for parents, caregivers, and individuals who want to reduce inflammation and make choices that support long-term health without the confusion, overwhelming amount of information, or judgment. Everyone’s journey is different, but we all deserve the chance to give our bodies the nourishment they need to thrive.

Thank you for joining me in this journey. I hope this book can be your first step towards a healthier, happier life for you and your family.
